All About Steeks with Lorna Miser
Steeking is a traditional technique for making openings in pieces knit in the round. In this class we will discuss both common and uncommon ways to use steeks. You will practice 3 different methods for securing steeks without a sewing machine. You will take a deep breath and cut your sample steeks. Then, you will learn a variety of methods for dealing with the cut edges to create a beautifully finished product.
Supplies
More of the yarn used for your swatches. Worsted weight wool yarn in a color that contrasts with your swatches, sewing needle and thread in a color that contrasts with your swatches, 2 size 4.5mm/US 7 circular needles in any length, 3.75mm/F crochet hook size, small sharp scissors.Homework
Using worsted weight, non-superwash wool and size 4.5mm/US 7 needles, make 2 swatches as follows.Swatch 1 Cast on 30 sts. Work in stockinette stitch (knit the RS rows, purl the WS rows) until piece measures 6". Bind off. Swatch 2 Cast on 30 sts. Row 1 (RS): K13, k1 through back loop, k2, k1 through back loop, knit to end. Row 2 (WS): P13, p1 through back loop, p2, p1 through back loop, purl to end. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 6". Bind off. |
