Simple Finishing Tips with Sarah Peasley
Let Sarah help you put a sweater together step by step. Sew seams smoothly, pick up stitches evenly (and without gaps), weave in ends invisibly, and learn to block like a pro. Turn your knitted pieces into a beautifully finished product that you'll be proud to show off. Techniques covered include: 3-needle bind-off, sewing garter stitch, sewing stitch-to-stitch, sewing row-to-row, sewing stitch-to-row, picking up stitches, weaving in ends, and blocking/laundering. Supplies
50 grams smooth, light-colored, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn; 10 yards smooth, contrasting-colored, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn; 4.5mm/US 7 circular or straight needles or size to match yarn; 3.75 or 4mm/F or G crochet hook, safety pins, blunt darning needle, sharp tapestry needle, scissors.Homework
Swatch 1: Cast on 20 stitches. Work 5 rows of k1, p1 rib. Starting with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch for 16 rows. End after working a purl row. Bind off. Cut yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail.
Swatch 2: Cast on 15 stitches. Knit 8 rows (garter stitch). Starting with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch for 20 rows. End after working a purl row. Do not bind off. Cut yarn, leaving a 4 1/2-yard tail. Swatch 3: Cast on 15 stitches. Knit 8 rows (garter stitch). Starting with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch for 19 rows. End after working a knit row. Next row (WS): Bind off 3 sts purlwise, purl to end. Next row (RS): Knit until 3 sts remain on left-hand needle, k2tog, k1. Next row (WS): Purl across. Repeat last 2 rows 3 more times (8 sts remain). Work 8 more rows stockinette stitch, end after working a purl row. Do not bind off. Cut yarn, leaving a 1-yard tail. Swatch 4: Cast on 30 stitches. Knit 8 rows (garter stitch). Starting with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch for 36 rows. End after working a purl row. Do not bind off. Do not cut yarn. |
