Creative Knitting: Crazy Quilt Style with Myra Wood
Learn how to design and knit in different directions to make a unique fabric based on an overall template rather than a specific pattern. A basic template will be provided to make a pillow or purse but you'll learn how to make your own clothing templates as well. Learn to combine triangles, squares, and rectangles to fill your shape like a jigsaw puzzle or traditional crazy quilt. We'll discuss how to knit shapes to exact sizes, ways to join as you go, and finishing and embellishing to complete your wearable work of art. You'll never look at your knitting (or your stash) the same way again!

Supplies
10-20 yards each of 15 to 20 coordinating smooth, #4 (worsted weight) yarn, any fiber; several small skeins of coordinating novelty and textured yarns; 3.75, 4 and 4.5mm/US 5, 6 and 7 short straight or circular needles; various sizes of crochet hooks from E to I, yarn needle, plastic protractor, pencil with eraser.

Homework
Block the following swatches to exactly 4" x 4". Larger or smaller squares are not usable for this class but can be used later so re-knit the squares until they are the correct size when blocked for this homework task.
Swatch 1 Work in stockinette stitch.

1. Cast on 1 stitch, knit front, back and front of same stitch. (3 sts) 2. On all wrong side rows, knit front and back of 1st stitch, then purl to end of row. On each right side row, knit front and back of 1st stitch, then knit to end of  row.
Continue until 1 side of the square is approximately 3.75-3.85". (Each row increases 1 stitch.)
4.
On the very next row and every row until 1 stitch remains, work in pattern to last 2 sts, then knit 2 together. (Each row decreases 1 stitch.) 5. Cut yarn leaving a 5 inch tail and pull through.

Swatch 2 In a second color, work in garter stitch.
1. Cast on 1 stitch, knit front, back and front of same stitch. (3 sts) 2. All rows, knit front and back of 1st stitch, then knit to end of row on each row until 1 side of the square is approximately 3.75-3.85". (Each row increases 1 stitch.) 3. On the very next row and every row until 1 stitch remains, knit to last 2 sts, then knit 2 together. (Each row decreases 1 stitch.) 4. Cut yarn leaving a 5 inch tail and pull through.
