Thrummed Mittens: Crochet & Knit with Marly Bird
Heard about thrumming but not sure what it is all about? This is the perfect and exciting class to learn this fun technique. Available for both crochet and knit making, this skill adds a big value to any crafter. Leave class with a comprehensive knowledge of thrumming and the start of a mitten.

Supplies
Knitters: Size 3.75mm/US 5 24” circular and double-pointed needles; or size to obtain correct gauge.
Crocheters: Size US F/5 (3.75 mm); or size to obtain correct gauge.
Both: 300 yds #2 (sport-weight) yarn, 2 oz unspun fleece, stitch holders, removable stitch marker, and tapestry needle.

Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.

Homework
For knitter: Using sport weight yarn listed in supplies and size US 5 needles, cast on 20 sts and work in stockinette stitch for approx. 2”; put on stitch holder. We will work on this swatch in class.
Make the cuff of the mitten using the sport weight yarn listed in supplies, chose a cast on number appropriate for your mitten. Finished hand circumference (measurement around the knuckles): 6 (7, 8, 9) inches. Note: Thrums take up room in the mitten so plan for the extra “stuffing”. Cuff: CO 32 (36, 40, 44) sts arrange stitches evenly as possible on 4 dpn’s or on circular needle(s). Place marker (pm) and join to work in the round. Work in k2, p2 ribbing until cuff measures 2 1/2 (2 1/2, 3, 3) inches.

For crocheter: Using the sport weight yarn listed in supplies make a Griddle Stitch Swatch: Ch 22 Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next ch, *sc in next ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * to last ch. Sc in last ch, turn—11 sc, 10 dc. Row 2 Ch 2, (tch does not count as st here and throughout) *dc in first sc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * to last st, turn—10 sc, 11 dc. Row 3 Ch 2, *sc in dc, dc in sc. Repeat from * to last st. Rep rows 2 and 3 until swatch meas 2”. DO NOT FINISH OFF, we will work on this swatch in class.
