Designing with Lace with Brooke Nico
The difference between a good lace design and a great one is the trick of incorporating the lace motifs into the shaping of the finished piece. Lace motifs can gently change and grow into larger motifs, or even whole new patterns. All of this can work with your garment shapes to create a unified, visually pleasing whole. In this class, we will learn how to chart lace patterns, then how to shape your knitting within a lace motif. On day 1, we’ll talk about exploding, or enlarging, a single motif, transitioning to a new motif, and adding more repeats within a knitted piece. On day 2, we’ll move on to discussing the common shaping lines and methods for various shawl shapes (circle, triangle, and rectangle), and for several garments (raglan, yoke, and capelet). Then, the fun begins as we work in small groups and each student begins designing a lace garment of his or her choice.

Pencil, eraser, yarn of your choice (if you have a particular yarn you want to design for, bring it, otherwise a smooth, light-colored, fingering or sport weight wool is great for swatching), appropriate needles for your yarn, stitchionary if you have one, if you have a laptop and can bring it, we will talk about charting on a spreadsheet software (I'll also have graph paper available).
