Twined Textured Socks with Beth Brown-Reinsel
Learn the Swedish technique of Tvaandsstickning, or Twined knitting by knitting a small sock using worsted weight yarn. Twined knitting often is worked with two yarns of the same color, twined around each other to create a dense, warm, and durable fabric. The sock is worked circularly on double-pointed needles (although you may use two circulars or Magic Loop if you prefer) and includes many techniques: a Twined Knitting cast-on, reading and working from a chart, the "O" stitch, the crook stitch, Chain Path, a traditional motif for the leg, and an unusual method of working the afterthought heel.
Note: Must be proficient with double-pointed needles, two circulars or Magic Loop.
NO SINGLE PLY YARNS! 2-3 oz. light-colored #4 (worsted-weight) yarn; about 1-2 oz. of a contrasting yarn; some waste yarn; one set of short double-pointed needles 4mm/US size 6; a crochet hook size D or E; magnetic board or sticky notes for keeping one's place on the chart.
The main color and contrasting color yarns MUST be wound into separate center-pull balls before class. Find both ends before class. Please choose a yarn that has at least two plies if not more. Cascade 220 works well.
