Beyond the Pattern: Knitting 'Purls' of Wisdom with Christine Bylsma
Long before 'cast on' and even after 'sew seams' there are numerous details, tricks, and techniques that can make knitting better looking but are never spelled out in patterns. These are a dozen of my most essential 'purls' of wisdom for knitting success—from winding a pull-skein by hand to wearing the garment out the door. Each nugget of information can make knitting more enjoyable and produce more professional results.
Yarn and needles used for swatches, 1 or 2 different types of needles (metal, plastic, wood, tip shape) in same size as swatch needles, circular needles 2 sizes smaller than swatch needles, a range of needle sizes and crochet hooks, scissors, blunt-tip tapestry needle, tape measure, calculator.
Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.
Knit two stockinette swatches of 30 sts x 4 inches in smooth, worsted-weight, light-colored yarn.
Bind off the first swatch. Do not bind off second swatch or cut yarn.
