Freesole Socks with Anna Zilboorg
For avid sock knitters, this new construction makes possible stranded socks with plain soles and socks with different yarns on the soles, insteps, and tops. But its greatest advantage comes later, when the sock has developed a hole. Any part of the sole or heel can be easily removed and reknit!
The sock begins with a 2-part toe (pick-up shaping on chain technique), continues up the instep in pattern (2-handed-backwards technique), then the sole is worked, attaching as you go and shaping a gusset (strip-joining technique). Finally you turn the heel, pattern it, join the front, and knit up the leg. All this while making a sample sock large enough to hold quarters in your car.
5 short double-point needles or circulars if that is what you knit on; sport weight or heavier yarn in medium or light color.
Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.
