Foundation Stitches 101: the Basics with Marty Miller
The most difficult part of a crochet pattern is working into the foundation chain. Learn how to avoid the foundation chain by making the chain AND the first row of stitches at the same time. You already know how to make the basic stitches (sc, hdc, and dc). Now learn the basic foundation stitches (fsc, fhdc, and fdc) and how to use them in all your patterns and designs. You'll also learn why they are, as one student called them, 'a Lifesaver.' Some people call these foundation stitches "chainless foundation," or "no-chain foundation," or "chain-free foundation" stitches.

Smooth, light-colored, #4 (worsted) weight yarn, appropriate size hooks (5mm/H, 5.5mm/I, 6mm/J, 6.5mm/K), scissors
