Does the thought of cable knitting have you totally confused and all tied up in knots? Explore the basics of this classic knitting technique from deciphering charts to practicing all sorts of cable crossings. Learn expert tricks to make your cabled fabrics beautiful, not to mention fun and easy to knit!

Supplies
Homework swatches with yarn attached and needles used; two 4mm/US 6 double-pointed needles.

Homework
Make 4 swatches with smooth, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn and appropriate size needles, swatches 1, 2, and 3 with a light color and swatch 4 with a bright color such as red or green.
Swatches 1 and 2: Cast on 26 sts. Row 1 (RS): *P2, k2; repeat from* across, ending row with p2. Row 2: *K2, p2; repeat from* across, ending row with k2. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for 1" end after WS row. Do not cut yarn. Place stitches onto holder.
Swatch 3: Cast on 15 sts. Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1; repeat from * across, ending row with k1. Row 2: *P1, k1; repeat from* across, ending row with p1. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for 1" end after WS row. Do not cut yarn. Place stitches onto holder.
Swatch 4: Cast on 22 sts. Complete same as Swatch 1.
