Special Techniques for Beautiful Sweaters with Margaret Fisher
This class covers several knitting techniques that give your sweaters a nicely finished appearance.
Tubular cast-ons and bind-offs are attractive and elastic, look exactly the same, and look especially nice with 1 x 1 rib. In class, you will learn and practice all the steps for working the tubular cast-on and bind-off.
Short rows are used to shape knit fabrics without increasing and/or decreasing. We will review the uses of short rows, then work them in swatches. The swatch exercises will represent the use of short rows for shoulder shaping in a handknit sweater. Class instruction covers how to convert your pattern's difficult-to-seam, stair-step, shoulder bind-off to short-row shaping. Next, you will learn and practice duplicate stitch and see how it can be used. The class ends with a discussion and demonstration of cutting and separating a knit fabric and then grafting the pieces back together. These techniques can be used to make sweater alterations and to fix mistakes or small moth holes in knits.

Homework swatches; smooth, light-colored, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn; appropriate-size needles; dpns (1 set two sizes smaller and 1 set four sizes smaller than needles used to make swatches); several yards of yarn in a contrasting color.

Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.

With smooth, light-colored, worsted weight yarn and appropriate-size needles knit swatches as follows:
Swatches 1 and 2 (make 2 exactly the same): Cast on 16 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 3". Place stitches on holder, leaving several yards of yarn attached.
Swatch 3: Cast on 20 sts. Work in stockinette stitch for 4". Bind off.
