Swatching for Success with Deborah Newton
Share time with Deborah Newton exploring the huge part swatches play in her design process. Deborah’s swatches are not just for checking gauge; they tell the story of the sweater that is to come. Learn how to swatch in a way that will inspire and improve your own designs. Deborah will bring dozens of swatches from her collection to study. There will be time for some hands-on work as well.

Supplies
Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.

Homework
Choose an allover textured pattern (a knit/purl pattern, or slipped stitch, or cabled pattern) and a cable panel of your choice, any width, and work your swatch as follows: With a worsted weight yarn or heavier, cast on enough stitches to make a swatch, approximately 8-10” wide. RS row: k2 (keep these edge sts in Stockinette St: k RS, p WS), work textured pattern over the next ___ sts, place marker, work cable pattern over the center ___ sts, place marker, work textured pattern over the next ___ sts, k2 (keep these edge sts in Stockinette St: k RS, p WS).
