Five Steps to a Grand Finale with Candace Eisner Strick
The knitting is easy—it's the finishing that will make your garment get the rave reviews. If you know these 5 techniques, your finished garment is destined for a grand finale. Cast-on, bind-off, picking up, buttonholes and spacing, short-row shoulders, and seaming techniques will all guarantee a beautifully finished garment.

Supplies
2 ozs of #4 (worsted weight) wool in a light color, appropriately sized needles, a tapestry needle, a few yards of contrasting color yarn, one set double pointed US 8 needles, a crochet hook about the same size as needles.

Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.

Homework
Swatch 1 With worsted weight yarn and US 8 needles, cast on 18 sts. Work in k2, p2 ribbing for 2 inches. Do not bind off, but leave a length of yarn about 1 yard long.
Swatch 2 Knit one sample neckline swatch from the following directions. Use worsted weight yarn and US 8 needles. Bring remaining yarn to class to finish neckline. Cast on 39 sts. Work 4 rows of seed stitch, then 2 inches of stockinette stitch, ending with a completed wrong side row. Shape neck: Work 14 sts, cast off middle 11 sts, work remaining sts. Work Right Side Separately: Work wrong side row, then at the beginning of the next 6 right side rows, bind off 3 sts, 2 sts, (1 st) 4 times. Work 5 rows even. Bind off remaining 5 sts. Work Left Side: Attach yarn at neck edge on wrong side. Beginning on this row (WS), work as for right side, working shaping on WS rows. Work 6 rows even then bind off.
Swatches 3 to 6 (Make 4 the same): With worsted weight yarn and US 8 needles, CO 12 sts. Work 6 rows of stockinette stitch, starting with a knit row. Leave sts on needle with about 5 yds of yarn attached.
Swatch 7 and 8 (Make 2 the same): With worsted weight yarn and size #8 needles, Cast on 12 sts. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for about 1 inch, then in stockinette stitch for 6 inches (7 inches total). Bind off.
