Tapestry Technique for Wearable Textiles with Judith Shangold
Learn to paint with yarn using tapestry techniques. We usually think of tapestries as densely woven, weft-faced weaves used for wall hangings and rugs. The same techniques can be used with finer yarns and balanced weaves, however, to create textiles suitable for clothing and accessories.
You will come to class with your rigid-heddle or multi-harness loom warped for a cowl. After learning various ways to join colors, you will weave your cowl. Finishing and seaming will be demonstrated so that you can complete your project at home.

Supplies
Loom with 10 dent heddle or reed. Suitable yarns for scarf/cowl that will weave at about 10 ends per
inch and 10 picks per inch, in a variety of colors. Warp: 165 yds Weft: Approx. 125 yds. Shuttles. Tapestry beater or kitchen fork.

Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.

Homework
Warp your loom 8-10 inches wide using 10 dent heddle.
Put on a warp that is a total of 64" long. This includes 40" weaving  plus 24" loom waste
Use soft dk or light worsted yarn. Yarn should be soft and drape.  It can be all one color.

Options:
-Alternate 2 warp threads light worsted with 2 thin bamboo. (Bambu 7, 2100 yds per lb, is a good weight). Have the colors be low contrast to each other.
-Set up warp with 3 stripes. Make outside stripes the same color. Make center stripe another color.

Bring more of the warp yarns to use for weft. Bring other contrasting colors of same or different yarns for weft. These yarns can be same or different weights and textures.

Students must arrive to class with warped looms. If you have any questions or concerns
