Cowl-o-rama! with Beth Whiteside
Design your own cowl! Keep it simple or make it complex; class concepts will help you decide how much you’re ready to take on.
You’ll learn about types of stitch patterns, pattern repeats (multiple of 6 sts) and balancing stitches (the + 2 in multiple of 6 sts + 2), selvedge stitches, options for working with large stitch repeats and panels, and considerations for working methods (flat or circular? widthwise or lengthwise?), all of which influence and affect overall design possibilities. At the end of class you’ll be on your way to your own cowl designs.

100 yds #3 (DK) or heavier yarn and needles appropriate for yarn (from ball band or experience) for swatch homework and class exercises; paper, pencil and eraser for drawing cowl shapes, tape measure or ruler.

Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.

Swatch 1 Cast on 28 sts. Work in 2x2 rib until work measures 5 inches; bind off.
Swatch 2 Cast on 38 sts (1 selvedge stitch on each end). Work Seaweed Pattern (multiple of 6 sts, 12 rows)
Row 1 K1, [p4, k2] to last st, k1. Row 2 and all other even rows K1; knit the knit sts, purl the purl sts (as they appear on this side of the work) to last st, k1. Row 3 K1, [p3, k3] to last st, k1. Row 5 K1, [p2, k4] to last st, k1. Row 7 K1, p1, [k4, p2] to last 6 sts, k4, p1, k1. Row 9 K1, p1, [k3, p3] to last 6 sts, k3, p2, k1. Row 11 K1, p1, [k2, p4] to last 6 sts, k2, p3, k1. Repeat Rows 1-12 two more times; bind off.
