Norwegian Mittens with Beth Brown-Reinsel
Learn Norwegian mitten construction by knitting one of a pair of mittens in two colors on double-pointed needles. Topics to be covered include striped ribbing, the Norwegian thumb gusset, seam stitches, pointed tip, and different patterning on the front and back of the mitten. In addition, yarn dominance and different styles of knitting will be covered in class.
Note: Must be proficient with double-pointed needles, two circulars or Magic Loop.
Prior experience with stranded color knitting is helpful.
__For Adult Size: 3 oz each of 2 colors of worsted weight yarn and one set each of dp needles size 4 or 5 for ribbing, and 6 OR 7 for mitten body.
__For Large Child Size: 3 oz. each of 2 colors of DK weight yarn and one set each of dp needles size 3 for ribbing, and 4 or 5 for mitten body.
__Tapestry needle, stitch markers, sticky notes or magnetic board for reading the charts.
Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.
Cast on 40 sts with smaller sized needle in Long-Tail method with
MC (main color, usually the darker color). Join and work K2, p2 ribbing for 10 rounds in MC. The remainder of the cuff will be worked in class.
