Tube socks are out of style. Add some heel options to your sock-knitting skill set! Work a traditional sock heel from the top down and from the toe up, without those annoying holes at the corners. Insert a short-row heel into your sock-in-progress or add it later as an afterthought. Also included: a discussion of different heel-flap stitch patterns and reinforcement options.
Five 20-gram balls (100 grams total) of smooth, light-colored, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn (one for each of the five homework swatches); 50 grams smooth, contrasting-colored, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn; 4.5mm/US 7 double-pointed needles or size to match yarn; stitch markers; scissors; safety pins.
Using one 20-gram ball of yarn for each of the five swatches:
Swatch 1: With double-pointed needles, cast on 24 stitches and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Work k1, p1 rib for 1/2”. Work stockinette stitch for 2”. Work k1, p1 rib for 1/2”. Bind off in pattern.
Swatches 2-5: With double-pointed needles, cast on 24 stitches and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Work k1, p1 rib for 1/2”. Work stockinette stitch for 1”. Place stitches on hold. Do not bind off. Do not cut yarn.
