Grafting Invisibly: Knits and Purls with Daniela Nii
Not satisfied with the look of your 3-needle bind-off or Kitchener-stitch seam? Want the seam to become as invisible as possible and hard to detect? Then join Daniela in this class to learn about the ins and outs of grafting stockinette stitch (a.k.a. Kitchener stitch), reverse stockinette stitch, garter stitch, and k1, p1 and k2, p2 ribbing, and knit and purl stitch patterns as invisibly as possible. Learn to join live stitches top-to-bottom (no change in knitting direction) and learn how to handle the half-stitch jog when joining live stitches top-to-top in ribbing. You will leave this class with a deeper understanding of the grafting process and will feel confident in using your new grafting skills in place of the Kitchener stitch or the 3-needle bind-off for your knitting projects.
10 homework swatches; smooth, solid, contrasting color to swatch color, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn for grafting, 2 double-pointed needles to place held stitches on for grafting, crochet hook suitable for yarn, tapestry needle.
Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.
Use a smooth, solid, light-colored, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn for all swatches so that we can see our stitches.
Begin all swatches with the following provisional cast-on: Using a contrasting color, crochet a chain of at least 20 stitches; break yarn and make a knot in this tail to know which end to ravel the chain from later.
Work 3 stockinette stitch swatches. With working yarn, knit a stitch through 15 purl bumps on back of crochet chain (15 stitches on needle). Work in stockinette stitch (knit RS, purl WS) for a few inches; break yarn and place live stitches on a holder.
Work 2 garter stitch swatches. With working yarn, knit a stitch through 15 purl bumps on back of crochet chain (15 stitches on needle). Knit every row for a few inches; break yarn and place live stitches on a holder.
Work 3 k2, p2 rib swatches. With working yarn, knit a stitch through 14 purl bumps on back of crochet chain (14 stitches on needle). Work in k2, p2 rib, beginning and ending with k2, for a few inches; break yarn and place live stitches on holder.
Work 2 pattern swatches. Cast on 19 stitches using provisional cast-on. For pattern swatch 1 Row 1 (RS) K2, p1, k5, p1, k1, p7, k2. Row 2 (WS) Work stitches as
they appear (knit the knit stitches, purl the purl stitches). Rows 3 and
4 Repeat Rows 1 and 2. Row 5 K2, p7, k1, p1, k5, p1, k2. Row 6 Work
stitches as they appear. Rows 7 and 8 Repeat Rows 5 and 6. Repeat Rows 1–8, then work Rows 1 and 2 once more; break yarn and place live stitches on a holder.
Pattern swatch 2, Work Rows 5–8 (above), then work Rows 1–8, bind off.
Block all swatches so that they lay flat for easy grafting.
