Elizabeth Zimmermann's Baby Surprise Jacket Explicated! with Jennifer Miller
Elizabeth Zimmermann’s famous Baby Surprise Jacket is a very charming, adaptable, useful pattern that works, as originally written, for newborns through toddlers. The pattern must be easy, since tens of thousands of them have been made over the years – and that counts only those posted on Ravelry! However, EZ’s pattern writing style is famously conversational and not particularly linear, making it a bit baffling for contemporary knitters. With this class and the basic pattern, you will be able to make it quickly! In fact, it’s quite easy and lends itself to endless creativity. Jennifer has constructed dozens of BSJs in all sizes and has created her own annotation to the pattern.
Note: Must have the Baby Surprise Jacket instructions from Schoolhouse Press.
#3 (DK or light-worsted weight) yarn, 4, 4.5 or 5mm/US 6, 7 or 8 24" circular needles (choose a size to create a medium-firm fabric with your chosen yarn); stitch markers, safety pins
If you do not already own it, purchase a copy of the Baby Surprise Jacket instruction sheet from Schoolhouse Press. Click on the link and scroll down to find the instruction sheet.
Using the long-tail method, cast on 160 stitches with the yarn and needles specified in the supplies.
