Improve Your Knitting Technique with Patty Lyons
We know how to knit, but do we know how to build a perfect fabric? There’s always room for improvement! Does your knitting 'row out' (your purl stitch is looser than your knit stitch), are you looking for a better way to control your gauge? What about alternative ways to tension your yarn when working with stiff yarn or slippery yarn? We’ll explore ways to improve your knitting technique by looking at the most important fundamentals, like the job of the left needle tip and the right needle shaft, stitch sizing, and even the correct exit path of your stitch. We will explore edge stitches, cast-on and bind-offs and a huge array of knitting tips. The last part of the class will be open for all knitting questions (those you have put in the “bag of why”), so come with your questions and let’s explore our knitting.

Supplies
Smooth, light-colored, #4 (worsted-weight) yarn; appropriate size needles; OPTIONAL: to experiment with purl gauge, bring needles 2-3 sizes smaller or larger.
Knitting and Crochet Basics

Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.

Homework
Please bring in the following swatches (we will not have time to make the swatches in class)You will need to make the following 2 swatches. Do not bind off swatches. All swatches are to be put on a stitch holder or leave on a needle, leave plenty of yarn attached to these swatches, we will be working on them in class.

Swatch 1: Cast on 24 stitches, work 2" in plain stockinette (no garter edge), enough to get a sense of your knitting style.
Swatch 2: Cast on 28 stitches. Row 1 *K3, p2*; repeat from * to * to last 3 stitches, k3. Row 2 *P3, k2*; repeat from * to * to last 3 stitches, p3. Repeat Rows 1-2 three more times.
