Smooth, light-colored, #4 (Aran-weight), wool yarn to practice various bands and buttonholes (avoid acrylic if possible; if allergy to wool is an issue, use a machine-washable wool as it is coated in acrylic); needles slightly smaller than what you would usually use with this yarn, 4.5 mm/US 7 should be appropriate for this 4 to 4.5 sts-to-the-inch yarn .
Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.
