Bow Ties are Cool: An Introduction to Hand Sewing with Franklin Habit
The word is out: hand sewing can be as relaxing, rewarding, and beautiful as knitting, crochet, and weaving. In this day-long workshop, participants will work on the ideal introductory project–a bow tie–as they learn and practice the fundamentals: cutting, stitching, interfacing, pressing, turning, and more. As you work, Franklin will share fascinating lore and artifacts from the history of hand sewing. Please note that not all students will finish their ties during the class; but all will receive thorough instruction in the required techniques.

Materials fee: $5

Supplies
A half-yard of good quality woven cotton fabric (quilting cotton is ideal), width of 40-45". (The fabric should be free of surface embellishments (sequins, etc.) and textures (jacquard weave, etc.) An overall light or medium color is recommended. IMPORTANT: fibers other than cotton (i.e., silk and knit fabrics are not suited to this class and may not be used); sharp scissors suitable for cutting the fabric (students who possess a rotary cutter and small mat are welcome to bring and use them and note that embroidery scissors will not be up to the task.); sharp pencil (mechanical recommended).
OPTIONAL: Students who possess small, battery-powered tabletop crafting lamps are encouraged to bring them.
