Introduction to Wool Applique with Mary Flanagan
Wool applique is such a versatile needle craft, it can look very antique/primitive to very modern, all depending on choices of fabrics and threads. This class offers comprehensive information about the materials used and sewing techniques that will ensure that you are successful in achieving your chosen look from the first time you try it. Mary will discuss wool fabrics, “felted” wool fabrics, and show many examples of what results from the choices you make when buying wool. Choice of thread is the other essential component to wool applique, and the class will include a thread sampler collection to give you the opportunity to try them all. Together we will look at the variety of stitching techniques that are the traditional starting point for basic wool applique.
We will also look at examples of more advanced projects where the sizes of the applique pieces are more complicated, tips for doing more advanced stitches, and how to approach wool applique patterns.
The class project will be a classic “penny rug” which is basically stacked circles of various sizes which are then joined together to create a shaped mat such a circle, rectangle, diamond, or square. Each student will choose their own pre-cut wool in colors and sizes of circles to suit their own taste in style. Each project in the class will be unique!
