Combining Knits with Fabrics with Susan Lazear
Learn how to combine a fabric with yarn to create a mixed media project. This hands-on class will teach you how to measure and create a square-armhole style garment out of a fleece, wool,or other fabric, and plan knit sleeves and a collar or scarf to go with it. Students will measure each other, draft a pattern, then plan the use of yarn and stitch pattern to coordinate with the fabric. If you bring he fabric, you can use your lunch hour to find the perfect yarn in the market place. Various design concepts and combination techniques will be discussed in the class.
_Ruler (the longer the better, 18” gridded ruler is ideal)
_French curve (if you own one)
_Needle and thread
_Fabric that you would like to work with.
You will need at least a swatch of your fashion fabric. You are welcome to bring the entire piece. You will generally need two times the desired length of the garment you would like to make, assuming the width will go around half your figure.
If you would like to test the pattern in an inexpensive fabric first, bring some muslin or sweatshirt fleece to cut a prototype garment.
_Sample yarns you are thinking of combining with the fabric or plan to shop the market. _Needles to work with the yarn
_Pattern Paper – if you have, you may bring. Otherwise, I will have some for purchase.
