Design Your Own Fair Isle Sweater (Full Payment - Shared Room) with Janine Bajus
The infinite color possibilities in Fair Isle knitting can be intimidating!
Student work designed by Karen Hurst
We begin by discussing the use of color in Fair Isle knitting, color theory, and helpful resources; continue with an exercise in value recognition; and plunge into the process of identifying the colors in your inspiration source. Then it’s time to build your palette and see how the colors work together. Janine brings all 212 colors of Jamieson’s Shetland for hands-on “speed swatching!”
Spend day two choosing motifs and knitting them in your colors. You may bring charts, create your own in the workshop, or re-color one.
The focus on day three is construction and the fit issues specific to Fair Isle-type garments. Steeks, corrugated ribbing, adding bands, and purl-when-you-can borders are discussed and demonstrated.
As swatching continues, we will address color and pattern issues and solve problems as they emerge.
This workshop covers a lot of ground: by the end of the three days, you will be well on your way to finalizing your own Fair Isle garment pattern.
You must have experience with 2-color stranded knitting (or be willing to practice before the workshop) and you must have completed a sweater or vest (of any kind).
Materials fee: $40 covers Shetland yarn for extensive swatching, journals, bag, and 28-page handout.
_US1-4 24-32" circular needles (the range of sizes allows you to determine your gauge)
_inspiration photos (instructions will be sent before class).
