For most knitters, the thought of picking up stitches is not a happy one. But it doesn't have to be that way. __1 oz of DK or worsted weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors of the same yarn used for swatches
__Knitting needles in a size appropriate for the yarn selected,
Make 2 swatches in a light-color classic yarn:
Cast on 15 stitches, work 40 rows Stockinette stitch, and bind off.
Cast on 15 stitches, work 40 rows Garter stitch, and bind off.
