Guidelines
Required reading for the use of the KnitU free service

The Knitting
Universe is a close-knit community...
We know you'll exercise courtesy in your KnitU postings.
After all, in the words of the great Elizabeth Zimmermann, "All Knitters Splendid People."

Please read these guidelines and adhere to them whenever possible. You can be sure that many of your fellow students at KnitU have read them, and will know if you're posting something undesirable. If your post is too far afield, it will be rejected by the KnitU moderator, David Xenakis.

First, a word about copyright
KnitU is a free service of XRX, Inc. By using and posting on this service you agree that all submitted material(s) become(s) the property of XRX, Inc.

Great posts
First let's talk about the things that we really want you to post
  • Questions about a knitting term or technique that is unfamiliar to you (and the answers to those questions).
  • Requests for help understanding a knitting pattern that contains an unfamiliar term or technique, or that seems to have an error (we'll help whether it's one of our patterns or not)! Naturally, the explanations offered in response to these requests are welcomed too.
  • Looking for a Knitting Guild? Ask if there is one in your area. We're working on a searchable database that will answer that question for you, but for now, post on KnitU.

Posts about upcoming guild events are welcomed too, as long as they are brief. (Please note, we consider a guild to be a non-profit organization that was founded to promote knitting education and camaraderie. Your guild does not need to be a formal group or affiliated with any larger organization to be recognized here.)

Not-so-Great Posts
Here are the types of things we don't want to see on KnitU. Chances are, if your post contains one of the following phrases, it's not appropriate for KnitU:
  • My Pet Peeve is
  • I agree with so-and-so (also known as "me too" posts. Whereas you may want to show your support and enthusiasm, these really serve no purpose.
  • Let me introduce myself
  • My cat does the cutest thing?
  • My husband/wife/sister/brother/daughter/son/grandkid has a habit of?
  • I don't like my job and here's why
  • My yarn shop/company is having a sale, see our web site
  • Anything else that counts more towards the chat end of life than the knitting end of life.

Do you see a pattern in that list? These are all things that are important to us as individuals, and as knitters. However, we have almost 3000 people reading KnitU every day?would you really stand in front of 3000 people and interrupt a discussion about knitting to interject such comments? Probably not.

If you have something to say that hasn't been said on KnitU, post it. If you have a question for a more advanced knitter, or a knitting designer, post it.

Gray Areas
The following areas are up to the moderator's discretion, based on past experiences:

Polls:

Questions like "what's your favorite yarn?" and "do you all like circular needles?" are actually OK, as long as you are adamant that the answers come directly to you. Then the ensuing 400 messages will not be posted to KnitU. After you receive feedback, you are welcome to post the results. You can imagine that if only 20% of the KnitU members post their replies, that would be almost 600 messages that are of little interest to everyone!

Soliciting:

We sometimes get posts from people soliciting donations for various causes and events. These will be posted at the moderator's discretion.

Advertising:

Certainly, we want knitters to be able to find things they're looking for. If someone posts "Where can I buy shetland wool?" and someone answers "You can get Jamieson & Smith shetland from Schoolhouse Press at 1-800-YOU-KNIT, we'll allow it. That seems more like a public service, and different sources are mentioned, depending on the loyalty of their customers.

However, if Meg Swansen posts "Schoolhouse Press is a full-service mail order wool and knitting book source, and our price list is free, just call 1-800-YOU-KNIT for your copy", that isn't allowed. It's just too blatant, and if we let one person do it, then 40 more will follow, and some of them will post daily specials, and it will get out-of-hand. This is up to the moderator's discretion.

Other Business:

There are several other fine knitting magazines and for-profit businesses that sponsor knitting events. We wish them well, but we cannot be asked to provide a free forum for such events. (We would love, however, to advertise such events in Knitter's Magazine!). We know you'll understand why such "advertising" messages cannot be posted. We will, however, use our utmost discretion in this manner, and perhaps post a message about such an event depending on the message content.

Unpopular Viewpoints:

Since our List Moderator, Anne, has lots of experience with knitters and with knitting-related lists, she can often spot trouble a mile away. She reserves the right to decline a post based on her experiences.
