Class Title: Art of Knitting Backwards
Status: Please see our Schedule for other open classes.
Teacher: Candace Eisner Strick
Skill Level: Intermediate
Description: Learn to knit and purl backwards and how to apply this technique to the task of working an applied edging (it’s great not to have to turn your work at the end of those 6-st rows!). You will work a variety of edgings, and apply them to a larger piece as they knit.
Basics: Basics*: Sharp scissors; blunt tapestry needles (large & small); small calculator; pen/pencil/eraser; notebook & paper; stitch markers; flexible tape measure; crochet hooks of various sizes.
Supplies: Basics*, yarn from swatch, appropriate dpn, same size circ (any length), small amount worsted weight yarn. Side note about yarn: Because you will be learning new techniques, please bring a nice quality yarn, preferably a smooth, light colored wool. Cotton, acrylic, etc have no give, and it is sometimes hard to manipulate stitches when learning a new technique. It is easier and more enjoyable to learn when not fighting with an uncooperative yarn! Please email me at Candace@strickwear.com with any questions.
Homework: 4”x4” swatch knit in yarn of your choice, any st pattern. Bind off loosely.

They provide an easy way to play with color and add interest to your knitting, and they are a fabulous way to use leftover yarn. Play with colored pencils and scraps of paper and discover the importance of establishing foreground and background colors when working stripes. Find out how the Fibonacci sequence can help you create pleasing stripes. The more colors you bring, the more you can play! Bring colors you love and colors you hate - you may end up finding a use for all of them. If you bring sufficient quantities of yarn then you can turn your final sample (the jogless-stripes-in-the-round swatch) into a baby/toddler hat. In this class, a sampler will be knitted circularly to explore the following techniques: working from a chart, working with two different sizes of yarn, seam stitches, the main motif, the underarm half gusset, working with a yarn in each hand or with 2 yarns in the left hand, purling in pattern with two yarns on the wrong side of the garment, creating a front slit, creating facings, a twined knitting braid on the cuff, and overlapped cuff slit, and assembly. Designing a Skrå-trøjer and weaving yarns to eliminate long floats in the back of the work will also be covered.
