This small project will introduce the purl stitch. Try the pattern shown, or use different combinations of knit rows with purl rows to create texture.

The Skill

Purling is backwards knitting. Since we turn our knitting over at the end of a row, we need to do backwards knitting (purling) to have a continuous piece of right side knitting. When you knit a whole row, and then purl a whole row, over and over, you get Stockinette, or Stocking Stitch.

You will need:

  • Almost any yarn that is soft and not too fine. Have 2 or more colors.
  • Size 13 needles for bulky yarn

Cast on 18 stitches in your main color.

Knit 1 row.

Begin Purl Ridge Pattern:

Purl row 1

Knit row 2. These 2 rows will make Stockinette Stitch.

Knit pattern rows 1-2 two more times. You should have 7 completed rows (counting the row on your needle), and your cast-on row.

Change color and Purl 2 rows. Change color back to your starting color.

Repeat Purl Ridge Pattern at least 2 more times.

Purl 1 row, and knit 1 row, 3 times.

Knit 1 row.

Bind off leaving a long tail.

Sew sides together with bind-off tail, leaving an opening for your thumb, if you wish.

Knit second wrist muff.

The hottest thing: cuddly wrists!

My highschool aged daughter thinks the Wrist Muffs done in her school colors are just what her cheerleading squad needs!
