The Knitting Experience by Sally Melville

This lightly felted hat and mitten set was knit in the quiet hours of a new foreign exchange student's first weeks in frosty Norway, before the cold and the friends set in. Designed to be knit in flat pieces that are hand sewn together, you can see why Nicole is smiling—it's easy, quick, and just what she wanted!

For best results, knit odd rows and purl even rows. (For quicker or easier, and thicker knitting, knit all rows.)

You will need:

  • about 2-3 skeins of bulky 100% wool yarn
  • Size 13 needles
  • Contrast yarn for seaming

Norge Earflap Hat
Cast on 6 stitches. This is the top of hat.

Row 2

Ear Flap
Knit odd rows and purl even rows until remaining 14 stitches measure 1". End with an purl row

Even rows Purl 1, Purl 2 together, purl to end.

Next 2 Rows
Knit 2, cast off 1, knit 2 together.

Thread a length of yarn as long as your full arm-span through the last 2 loops, keeping ends even, and remove the knitting needle. Make tie as described below.

Make second side of hat.

Sew
Put pieces wrong sides together. Whip stitch the pieces together with a contrast color, sewing from right to left, always drawing the needle up through the fabric, with the bulk of the fabric below the sewing edge. Keep stitches rather loose, so the fabric edges will open up and lay flat. If you will be felting, be especially careful not to sew too tightly. Repeat this stitch in the opposite direction if you prefer "X's."

You may want to add a single crocheted edging all around the opening in a contrast color, like Nicole has done in the photo.

Tassel Ties
Using a crochet hook, chain the strands until they measure at least 2 inches for each ear flap, and about 4 inches for hat top. Knot and make tassel.

Felt.
