Knitter's summer is at hand. Don't you just feel like hitting the road with a good knitting project or two?

As long as you're not behind the wheel, summer road trips are a great time to do a little stash reduction. Socks make the classic glove-compartment project, but I get a lot of mileage out of a small-needle sweater on a long distance jaunt, too. As long as I remember my ShopFinder, I always find the best places to stop along the way, so I won't have to miss a stitch.

Check under Athena if you need the new ShopFinder, just out. It has a new look, and as always, is organized alphabetically by state, and city--perfect for quick off-ramp referencing.

Here's what's happening in the Knitting Universe

Universe (homepage):

  • Knitters stretch their fingers by surfing the Knitting Universe. Clickety-click, more than your sticks!

Knitter's Magazine Online:

  • Knitter of the Year nominations will be accepted from 6/1/03-9/15/03. Have you picked a worthy knitter? Click on the heading to find out more.

StitchesMarket.com:

  • NEW: Knitting Software
Sweater Wizard, Math Wizard, Sock Wizard and more! This is what you get when cottage craft gets down and digital.

  • Yarn Packs are up for Knitter's Summer issue

  • NEW: Denise Interchangeable Knitting Needles. Read about why these clever needles are back.

  • Note: StitchesMarket is the Knitter's Mall. Over a dozen vendors are available 24/7 to serve you. Shop them all, but check out once.

Events:

Community:

  • Lily Chin spent an evening crocheting David Letterman a Sweater on April 30, 2003. You can see the result at CBS.com

Lily writes: "As I'm typing in Tokyo, I just got *super* news !!! Letterman is running 'my' show again already on Monday, 5/26 ! Dunno if maybe the feedback was huge or Dave got lazy <G>. Spread the word. I'll be back just in time for this. Hugs, LC"

Books:

  • XRX has recently had a string (yarn?) of top books. It's not "Did we make Amazon's top 10 list?" it's "How high did we go?"!

If you haven't bought a knitting book lately, I strongly recommend Jean Frost Jackets, and Sally Melville's The Knitting Experience: The Knit Stitch. Due out soon: The Purl Stitch!

Knitter's kids:

  • Knit a felted cell phone pouch.

Athena (goddess of handcrafts and wisdom):

  • ShopFinder online, ready and waiting for your pre-travel queries. Your favorite shop's not listed? You can sign them up!

  • Quality patterns available for FREE download.

Subject: Daughter's Girl Scout Gold Award Project

Hi,
I read KnitU everyday but seldom if ever post a message. My inspiration for moving outside of lurkdom is my 16 year old daughter who is working on her Senior Girl Scout Gold Award project. Her message to you explaining her project accompanies mine. Katie has earned money for her project by knitting swatches for a local spinner/dyer who had a booth at SW. She used that money to buy wool to knit with and our local knitting guild is contributing items also. Without further ado Here's Katie:

Hi! As my mom already introduced me, here's what I'm doing :
My goal is to collect at least 100 hand-knit 100% wool items by June 2003 for orphans in Eastern Europe (CIC).

What's needed most: sweaters, vests, socks for 6 month to 6 year old children, especially 2 - 4 year-olds. However, hats and mittens, and items for larger sizes, are also welcome.

If you have hand-knit 100% wool items you would like to donate to my project for CIC, please send an e-mail to dinnykrotz@cs.com

Thank you in advance for anything you can do!

Mom here: Almost our whole family is working on this project; it's fun to see how to use up odd balls of wool, and little items knit up so quickly!

I enjoy all the KnitU messages and feel very much a part of this extended
family.

Diana Krotz
