Live in the NOW, while it lasts

New knitters may not realize that knitting hasn’t always been like this, hip and fashionable in a neo-cottage way. Knitting expos are riding high on a wave of enthusiasm, that is showing every sign of spiraling into a tsunami, traveling long and strong. What began in a flurry, and crashed on your shore (at Stitches, maybe?) will remain as a tide pool—your own private sanctuary of knitting knowledge.

But you should know that this isn’t happening around the world. Those of us in the path of a Stitches event, or an equally moving knitting experience, are the lucky ones. We are enjoying a hobby at its highest. Knitting as a craft is being lavished with attention. Artists, and designers are standing in line to show you something new in knitting.

It’s good you got in now!

Imagine the American Gondola craftsman in Venice who had to overcome so much to practice, excel, and take pride in his craft. He didn’t have the benefit of being able to get together with hundreds of other gondola makers to share successes and challenges.

Sure, he probably had some supporters, “Where did you get your beautiful wood?” “Hey, nice lacquer job!” but he can’t take a course on Gondola Making for Lefties (sorry, this is not a link), he can’t turn to the guy next to him and have any hope of borrowing a size 10 auger, and he definitely can’t hook up and leisurely read through all the posts to GondolaU.

We could have been born out of time, but here we are, together in the KnittingUniverse. You want to see yarnpacks for The Purl Stitch, and I am so happy to show them to you. You want to read through the Stitches East class descriptions to see if you really got the best ones (or if you will have to catch some of the others at West when it rolls around), and it thrills me to be able to have that info for you, anytime. Ya, we've got it pretty rough.

Here's to Livin' Large, being a Now Knitter,

Natalie
