Most of us knit or crochet to relax. What do you do?
I love to cook! I find that in the evenings I can get lost in the preparation of a great meal, and I find that so relaxing.
What's the most unlikely place you'Âve ever knitted or crocheted?
I lived in Guadalajara, Mexico in my 20's and once I took a project I needed to finish to a nightclub and worked on it while everyone else was dancing.
Which knitting and crochet luminaries (living or dead) would you invite to a dream dinner party?
My dream fiberly dinner would include Vashti Braha, Deborah Norville, Vickie Howell, Bette Midler, Madonna, & Terry Kimbrough
Tell us about your most unusual teaching experience.
Teaching on a recent cruise to Bermuda I had to wear deck shoes because the ship was in rough seas and it was even hard just to stand up. But the class seemed to have no problem crocheting and having fun. I can'Ât even crochet in a car that'Âs moving!!
What's your favorite tool in your knitting bag? Why?
I have a yarn snip that I can't live without. It'Âs not a pair of scissors so it doesn't matter if I use my left or right hand, and it'Âs super sharp making it easy to work with any fiber.
What's the latest knitting or crochet technique you learned that rocked your world?
I admit I'm a kind of obsessed with Tunisian lace crochet these days. I love that if you use a giant Tunisian hook with thin yarn even the simple stitch looks like beautiful lace!
When you look at another designer's work, what makes you say "wow"?
I love love love texture, and when a designer can use texture to make their project looks sumptuous it makes me say more than "wow"!
Have you ever seen one of your designs on someone "in the wild"? What's that feeling like?
It's almost an otherworldly experience. As a designer I don't think you could receive a bigger compliment!!
As a famous knitting (or crochet) teacher, you must travel a lot. Do you have any secret airport vices you'd like to share?
When I'm at the airport on the way home from an event I usually eat something that I would NEVER eat otherwise. Like a big blue cheese burger with garlic cheesy fries. But only on the way home, I figure I can hit the gym the next day.
One last thing, what are you most looking forward to about STITCHES?
I can't wait to come to STITCHES Midwest! I graduated high school in Michigan, and Chicago was so close that we took many field trips there! It truly feels like I'm coming home with this STITCHES, and I can't wait to connect with my Midwestern roots!!
