Most of us knit or crochet to relax. What do you do?
I lift weights, I read books, and I play the ukulele.

What's the most unlikely place you've ever knitted or crocheted?
I refuse to answer on the grounds that my mother might read this.

Which knitting and crochet luminaries (living or dead) would you invite to a dream dinner party?
I want to have a one-on-one with the anonymous knitter who first discovered the decorative potential of the yarn over.

Tell us about your most unusual teaching experience.
I suppose that would be an impromptu lesson that happened at the gym. I'd finished working out and so had one of the professional bodybuilders who's usually there at the same time. He confessed to a curiosity about How It All Works, and in thirty minutes I had him knitting garter stitch. (He's still knitting. In exchange, he helped me improve my front squats.)

What's your favorite tool in your knitting bag? Why?
Notebook and pencil. If I didn't keep copious notes about everything, I'd never get anywhere because I'd get lost over and over and over. I know knitters who never take notes, and I don't understand how they do it.

What's the latest knitting or crochet technique you learned that rocked your world?
Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off. I tried it out on a forthcoming shawl design and the result surpassed expectations. I'm always slow to adopt new techniques, to be honest, but is one I will keep and use again.

When you look at another designer's work, what makes you say 'wow'?
Genuine originality. It's rare.

Have you ever seen one of your designs on someone 'in the wild'?
Happily, yes.

What's that feeling like?
Like being asked to dance after you've been convinced you'll end up a wallflower.

As a famous knitting (or crochet) teacher, you must travel a lot.  Do you have any secret airport vices you'd like to share?
I like to travel in my kilt. It freaks out TSA agents to no end.

One last thing, what are you most looking forward to about STITCHES?
The pajama party. I'm trying madly to finish up a new robe so I'll have something elegant to wear.
