Merike Saarniit
Merike Saarniit has been teaching workshops in knitting, spinning, weaving, and dyeing for over 20 years, and at most STITCHES events since 2000. The combination of her traditional Estonian heritage (including serious research of Estonian knitting) and her contemporary degree in Studio Art contribute to her unique designs and workshop presentations.

588-3 Advanced Cast-Ons Estonian Style Firm, elastic, decorative. Any one or all 3 characteristics can be found in a variety of unusual yet functional cast-on techniques often used in Estonian knitting. We'll explore 1-color and 2-color braids, fringed, picot-edged, double-yarned, and doubled-stitch cast-ons, Estonian 'magic' cast-on, and see where best to use them.

618-3 Advanced Fiendishly Difficult Stitches Yes, these are stitches for the adventurous knitter! Explore unusual stitch manipulations that create exotic fabrics. We'll look at what can designate a stitch as 'difficult' and find ways to understand and create those stitches efficiently.

619-3 Advanced Exotic Estonian 'Patent' Stitches Here's the fast and efficient Estonian method of creating those luscious brioche-stitch patterns that are so rich in texture. This technique is also used for unique cables and ribs that are sure to evoke "How'd you DO that?" comments. We'll swatch all-over patterns, 2-color patterns (where one color 'net' seems to float on a different color ground), and exotic-looking cables that don't require a cable needle.

Start this class with a basic stitch maneuver that elongates the stitching, this becomes exponentially more complex and exciting with every added element. 720-3 Easy Spinning for Knitting Spin your own yarn and then develop unique 'gourmet yarns' in silk, alpaca, angora, and the most luscious wools. Learn tips and tricks to ensure gorgeous handspun yarns, perfect for your special projects. Great for both those who want to learn the art of spinning and those who want to develop their spinning skills.
Material fee: $10 for assorted fibers and drop spindles for use in class.

631-3 Intermediate 3-2-1: Three 2-color patterns, One color at a time Three fun techniques for intriguing 2-color stitch patterns worked in the round with just one color at a time. We'll start a fingerless glove with a 2-color cast-on and explore 1 or 2 stitch patterns in each of 3 techniques suitable for socks, mittens, hats, or other items knit in the round. These are among many unusual stitch patterns found in old Estonian stitch libraries.
