Back To STITCHES West 2015 Class List

Thursday 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
No skills required Opening Day Spotlight only Knitting a life in wild times

Anna, an Episcopalian solitary and a scholar of sorts, has spent the last 30 years on a mountain top coming down occasionally, mainly to teach at STITCHES. She has given us patterns in amazing colors, insights into the glory of socks, and a technical discourse on the craft of knitting. Through many decades of rapid change, she has watched the wax and wane of the fiber world with some wry humor and a great deal of devotion, seeing in it ultimately a microcosm of our best hopes for human survival.

Join us for a romp through Anna's life and times and her view of this ancient world of women's work—the work of making mere necessity both beautiful and celebratory. Come away proud of your place in it and confident of the contribution you make.

2024 Easy Embroider Your Knitting Embroidery has been used always and everywhere to embellish fabric, while knitting has been left bare save for a few lazy daisies and french knots. In this class we'll integrate simple embroidery stitches into simple knitted stitches to create many different effects, new and wonderful.
Saturday 8:30 am - 11:30 am     SOLD OUT
5103 Intermediate Surprisingly Special Techniques Learn techniques that Anna has found more useful than she might have imagined. Most important is the perfect buttonhole—and it is a perfect buttonhole. There is also a k1, p1 rib with neat, even stitches; easy wrapping for clusters once, twice, and thrice; knitting backwards with two colors—never purl Fair Isle again, plus other hints which are more or less arcane.
Sunday 8:30 am - 11:30 am
5034 Intermediate Freesole Socks For avid sock knitters, this new construction makes possible stranded socks with plain soles and socks with different yarns on the soles, insteps, and tops. But its greatest advantage comes later, when the sock has developed a hole. Any part of the sole or heel can be easily removed and reknit!
The sock begins with a 2-part toe (pick-up shaping on chain technique), continues up the instep in pattern (2-handed-backwards technique), then the sole is worked, attaching as you go and shaping a gusset (strip-joining technique). Finally you turn the heel, pattern it, join the front, and knit up the leg. All this while making a sample sock large enough to hold quarters in your car.
