Betsy Hershberg
Betsy Hershberg is a life-long knitter whose knitting world was turned upside down and inside out when she learned how to bead knit in 2002. As ideas for combining beads and fiber began to take over her knitting brain, she found herself on a completely unexpected journey which has forever altered the way she thinks about her 'left-brained' self and the creative process. She shares some of these discoveries, along with unique bead-knitting techniques in her book Betsy Beads: Confessions of a Left-Brained Knitter. Betsy takes enormous pleasure in teaching, feeling it is especially rewarding to help knitters reach new levels of technical knowledge, confidence, and independence that will free them to explore their own individual creativity.

4087 Intermediate Go Big or Go Homeā€”XL Bead Balls In this combination technique-and-project class, students learn to create bead-knit wrappers for XL wooden beads (measuring 1ā€¯ in diameter). With strong, fine-gauge, solid and hand-painted tencel fibers and small US 00 needles, you can knit fabric that will have lots of beautiful little stitches. And lots of beautiful stitches provide seemingly endless options for stunning bead-placement patterns. As you work on your own series of beads, your personal gauge is used to plan the perfect-sized wrapper and bead design. You'll learn techniques including multicolor bead stringing, how to knit beads between stitches (the easiest way to place pre-strung beads), and options for grafting plain and bead-knit fabric. An alternative tubular method for encasing these beads will also be presented.
Note: Must be able to work a long-tail cast-on and be prepared to work with very small needles and small (Size 8) beads.
Materials Fee: $10 (for fiber, beading needle, and wooden bead balls). Students will supply their own beads; details provided with homework.
