Jennifer Stern-Hasemann, owner and designer at J Stern Designs, has a solid background in pattern design and drafting, fit, and construction.

Her original line of fashion patterns, jeans, a cup-sized fitted shirt, and a unique tee, focus on flattering designs with easy-to-follow instructions and fit techniques. She loves to work with knit fabric and has designed an Easy-to-Fit-and-Sew Collection of patterns specially designed for knits.

She shares a wide variety of sewing, serging, fitting, and construction techniques via her J Stern Designs on the YouTube Channel, with over 100 video tutorials. Additionally, she teaches for the Master Seamstress Program at URI and online at craftsy.com and patternreview.com.

9017 Easy Learn to Sew Knit Garments using your Sewing Machine If you're new to sewing clothes for yourself, this class is for you. Work with a variety of fabrics and notions following Jennifer's step-by-step guidance to help you get professional results sewing knit garments.

Knit fabrics are easy to work with because the raw edges do not fray. Built-in stretch makes them easy to fit. We'll start by discussing the best needles and notions to use, then talk about a variety of knits and how to use them. You will leave class with a reference binder full of knit samples that include a variety of seam treatments and finishing techniques. Your reference guide will take the mystery out of working with knits at home.
Note: Sewing machines provided for use in the classroom.

Materials fee: $20 includes binder with step-by-step instructions in page protectors and a variety of knit fabrics, stretch needle, stay tape, elastic, and other notions.

9032 Easy Tee Fit Workshop Join Jennifer as she takes you step-by-step through the process of fitting your new favorite knit top. The Tee Pattern has unique above the bust seams that make it easy to get a great fit no matter what your fitting challenges may be. Start by trying on knit muslins to determine which size to work with. Then, I'll show you simple pattern adjustments including a full-bust adjustment and neckline and shoulder adjustments. You can customize the look and fit of your Tee by relaxing the fit of the front and back lower bodice pieces and choosing between sleeveless, short or 3/4 length sleeves. Learn how to select fabric with the right amount of stretch to get flattering results. We'll play with a variety of knits that are included in your kit. You'll leave class with a pattern that’s ready for fabric and the confidence to pick out the perfect fabric.
This class can be combined with 9062 Garment Making 101 for hands-on sewing time.

9033 Easy How to Use Your Measurement to Draft Your New Favorite Skirt Let's make a great-fitting straight-skirt pattern that you can use to sew your new favorite skirt. If you've never tried your hand at drafting a pattern, this is the perfect project for you! We’ll pair up to take a set of body measurements, use those measurements to draft a basic straight skirt pattern, then use your personal pattern to cut and sew a custom skirt muslin. You will leave class with a completed skirt pattern and muslin that fits perfectly. The Skirt Draft Workbook includes step-by-step instructions for a variety of waistline treatments and how to draft them using your front and back skirt pattern pieces. If straight skirts are not your thing, no worries, see how easy it is to add fullness at the hem to create an A-line or flared silhouette. Plus, enjoy a trunk show of a variety of skirts that I designed using my custom straight skirt! You'll be amazed at the different designs you can create using your new custom-fit straight-skirt pattern.

9061 Easy Tank Top Hack: How to Add a Sleeve to a Tank Top Pattern and Transform it into a Tunic or Dress Learn how to work with a basic tank-top pattern to create a variety of styles. First, I'll show you how to add a sleeve to my Easy to Fit and Sew Tank Top Pattern, then we'll play with the hem length and add width to shape tunic and dress pattern pieces. You'll have the opportunity to try on samples to find the best size for you, and we'll discuss design options. You'll be surprised how fun and easy it is to create different looks from the same basic pattern. You will leave class with pattern pieces that are ready to sew together.
This class can be combined with 9062 Garment Sewing 101 for hands-on sewing time.

9068 Easy Yoga Pants and Beyond A great pair of yoga pants are worth their weight in gold. In this class you’ll have the opportunity to try on samples and pick the fabric and style of your yoga pants. Choose between a basic one-seam yoga pant with a custom waistband or a more tailored design that features unique seam detail and a hem finish with a back slit. Your kit includes the pattern and Performance Sports Knit Fabric with Dri-Max and Microbial properties. You can work with a soft, comfortable, double-brushed polyester knit or a firm compression knit that will smooth all your curves. Either way, you’ll learn how to sew knit fabric and end up with a pair of yoga pants that rival the ones you can find at Athleta or Nike!

9062 Easy Garment Sewing 101 If you were in one of my pattern fitting or design classes and you want to sew your new pattern together with my guidance, join me! This skill-building class will cover all the basics of garment sewing. We'll start by laying out fabric and pattern pieces. Learn how to be sure you're laying the pattern out on the grainline. After cutting out the pieces and sewing them together, we'll check to see if your test garment needs any fitting adjustments. This class will be filled with fun and inspiration because you'll be able to see what your fellow STITCHES United friends have been working on. You'll leave class with a fitting test garment and a pattern that's ready for your fashion fabric.

This class provides hands-on sewing time for students who have taken: 9032 Tee Fit Workshop, 9033 How to Use Your Measurements to Draft Your New Favorite Skirt, or 9061 Tank Top Hack: How to Add a Sleeve to a Tank Top Pattern and Transform it into a Tunic or Dress.
Sewing machines will be provided for use in the classroom. Materials Fee: $7.00 for muslin to sew a skirt sloper OR $12.00 for gray or black knit to sew a Tee, Top, or Knit Dress.
