Biography |
I have been sewing since I was about 5 and don't remember when I learned to knit. My mother was not a knitter, so I probably learned from my paternal grandmother. I have been knitting steadily since I was in high school, back in the age of the dinosaurs. I have 6 grown children and 7 1/2 grandchildren. I have knit for all of them at one time or another.
My first published design is in the XRX book, Socks, Socks, Socks. I have also had a design in the Kids book, Cast On, and been published by House of White Birches.
I seem to have been teaching all my life, starting as a teen in Girl Scouts and continuing as an adult trainer in both Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. I started teaching knitting for a local store, and expanded into conferences in the local area. The largest venue I have taught in is TKGA's National Convention in 2002.

What is your knitting mantra? |
Swatch, Swatch, Swatch
|
What inspires you? |
Mainly I like to work with texture. I have been getting more ideas about working with unusual materials.
|
Confess - when it comes to hiding your yarn, what are your secrets? |
I keep most of my yarn in boxes from computer paper. Each is numbered and I have index cards that tell me what is where. There are still things I don't know where to find. I know that they are here somewhere.
|
What is your idea of knitting heaven? |
Lots of time, lots of money to buy yarn, good friends to chat with.
|
How many UFO's (Unfinished Objects)do you have going at once? |
I usually only have 2-3 projects going at once. I lose my place if I have too many differnt projects.
|
What knitting commandment do you most like to break? |
Don't tie knots. I do take them out later when I weave in the ends.
|
What is your most dog-eared knitting reference? |
Barbara Walker's first Treasury
|
What is the most unusual place you've ever knitted? |
My knitting goes where I go, football games, car races, etc. My husband knows that I will go anywhere if I can take my knitting.
|
How long can you last without knitting? |
Not long, I have to be doing something with my hands.
|
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what one yarn, book, or gizmo would you want along? |
My 2 sets of Boy interchangable needles. With 2 sets, I could knit anything.
|
Who would you like to greet you in knitting heaven? |
Elizabeth Zimmermann
