Biography |
Born in Surrey, England in 1970.
Moved to Australia in 1975.
Learnt to knit shortly thereafter.
Hasn't stopped.
Earnt a Bachelor of Visual Arts in 1992, despite threats of failure due to knitting when I should have been printmaking.
|
What is your knitting mantra? |
If in doubt, rip it out.
|
What inspires you? |
Everything! Colour, light and shadow, textures, other people's knitting experiments.
|
Confess - when it comes to hiding your yarn, what are your secrets? |
I don't hide my yarn, it's in plain sight so I'll use it.
|
What is your idea of knitting heaven? |
A range of good quality wool in 360 colours and various weights and a credit card I never had to pay off!
|
How many UFO's (Unfinished Objects)do you have going at once? |
Two at the moment. I'll gradually build up to 15 projects over a couple of years, then suddenly finish them all before starting anything else.
|
My yarn stash equals the GNP (Gross National Product) of ... |
A very small and poor country. I tend to stash oddballs from the charity shop...
|
Whom would you like to see accept an Academy Award wearing your creation? |
Kermit the Frog. I'd make him a fairisle jumper with pictures of Jim Henson on it.
|
What knitting commandment do you most like to break? |
Most of them, but especially "never join a new ball of yarn in the middle of a row".
|
What frequently-asked knitting question do you hate to answer? |
"I'm looking for ____ (usually copyrighted) pattern. Please email it to me." I always say no.
|
What is your most dog-eared knitting reference? |
It's a tossup between Barbara Walker's stitch dictionaries and Glorious Knitting by Kaffe Fassett.
|
When and how did you learn to knit? |
I don't remember when I started learning but I'm still learning new things. I think knitting is in my family's genes.
|
What is the most unusual place you've ever knitted? |
The bus stop. That probably makes me very dull...
|
How long can you last without knitting? |
Months. Usually the hot ones.
|
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what one yarn, book, or gizmo would you want along? |
If the island had sheep, my spinning wheel.
|
How many hours have you knitted non-stop - and why? |
About 16, because it was freezing at art school and I wanted to finish my jacket for the next day's lectures!
|
Who would you like to greet you in knitting heaven? |
My family, whether they were knitters or not.
