Albright, Jennifer
Intarsia work, mostly on adult sweaters. I do, however, probably knit a sock every week (two pairs a month or more) because I knit them on the treadmill or whenever I have to wait places (appointments, restaurants, in line at the post office....) |

I'm a knitwear designer whose work has been featured in lots of magazines; I also do freelance designing for the major yarn companies. But the work that's closest to my heart is the designing I do for my own label, Kirsten Cowan Needleworks. I think I'm quite a versatile designer: I love doing women's, men's and children's sweaters as well as afghans and small projects, and I work with a broad range of stitch techniques. |

I am currently obsessed with knitting rugs and have just finished a book about the subject.
My book includes a brief history of knitted rugs, a thorough section on knitting basics for new knitters, and 21 stylish rug projects. I also include advice on embellishments, such as embroidery, fringes, and tassels; and instruction on finishing touches, such as weaving ends, sewing seams, blocking, backing, and lining.
Using inspiration from historical and contemporary designs, I've created patterns for multicolored Big Needle Garter Stitch Rug, Knit and Purl Oval Rug, Thunderbird Wall Tapestry, and others.
Every rug includes a detailed pattern plus ideas for modifying the design with historical techniques and unique embellishemnts for the more adventurous knitters out there. |

Hand knitting! I've sort of made my mark with the Viking knits, but any kind of knitting that gives a striking result from very little effort is my kind of knitting. The process is as important as the result, so I want the knitting to be effortless and restful, but I also need challenges and often find myself thinking "what if I tried that instead"? I'm intrigued by the technical aspects of knitting. I am also a master of shortcuts and "cheating" intelligently (as if there is such a thing as cheating in knitting). I hate writing, but do it anyway to share my knowledge and passion. I love teaching and do it whenever I get a chance. |

Melville, Sally
I used to think of myself as a designer and teacher whose specialty was colour and texture. While I still love doing all these things, my dedication is turning more to the craft itself. How can we get more people knitting? How can we bring knitters back into the fold? How can we garner knitting the respect it deserves as a creative activity--linking us to hundreds of years of working hands and knitting traditions? Writing my book (XRX's Sally Melville STYLES / A Unique and Elegant Approach to Your Yarn Collection) was an attempt to help knitters work through their yarn collections and bring excitement back into their knitting lives. But there is MUCH more work to be done! |

Designing Knitting patterns for publication individually or in magazines, & eventually in a book or two. I especially enjoy complex garter stitch patterns, labyrinths, petroglyphs, and Peruvian textile patterns, all usually multi-colored. I prefer to design non-garments for publication (no sizing!) -- including Sam the Ram & Sue the Ewe, drawstring pouches as samplers of complex patterns or luxury yarns, afghans, pillows, simple socks, lace shawls, hats and fingerless mittens, etc.
Some patterns are already for sale in a few retail locations (so far) and on my brand-new on-line pattern catalog website (http://www.EarthHeartDesigns.com), and in my new knitting pattern column in "Alpacas Magazine" |

My primary work is problem solving; I have built a business around finding solutions for fiber artists, but I think my #1 specialty is teaching. I absolutely love when you see the light come on in somebody's eyes when they understand something. I have lots of patience and an intuitiveness to determine learning styles and what will work. I work very hard to prepare for my classes and am as excited to teach as I hope my clients are to learn. Each group has different dynamics that keeps each workshop fresh. I especially love teaching knitting and spinning to children. I will teach any child under 18, and supply the materials, free of charge and will go anytime into the schools, fairs, etc to demonstrate. My passsion is to pass on the love of fiber to everyone! |

Lace Knitting. Ten years ago i began researching the history of lace knitting, particularly in Victorian Britain from 1836 when the first PRINTED patterns appeared.By 1847 the new knitting books had reached the U.S.A.so there is a close historical tie between the two countries.

Strick, Candace Eisner
Knitting is a huge part of my life, but I try to put it in the proper perspective. Being a cancer survivor, I know that nothing is as important as my health and life. If something goes wrong with my knitting now, I view it as an opportunity to learn something new and a chance to do more knitting by doing it again!! The finished product is important, but the process is what we all love. My specialty for my first book was mostly Fair Isle sweaters, as I was using and writing about Harrisville yarn. They are famous for their wonderful colors. My specialty for my second book was sweaters using hand-dyed yarns, as I interviewed 8 New England sheep farmers who hand dyed the wool they produced. I am presently working for a yarn company that specializes in hand dyed yarns using only natural dyes and no heavy mordants. My third book, Beyond Wool, is about all the fibers that we love to knit with...cashmere, alpaca, angora, silk, etc. I wrote about each fiber and then did designs showcasing each fiber. I am now infatuated with Austrian knitting, and hope to start my third book on this
subject.
I am also very interested in Shetland traditions, and I have a quilting book coming out in June, The Quilter's Quick Reference Guide. |

Strong, Gerdine
Angels--- as appeared in Knitter's #49, 50, 52-56. Great fun adapting traditional patterns to make shaped skirts, wings and bodices. |

Zilboorg, Anna
Right now it seems to be designing textured sweaters and fashionable hats. In the past I've been enamored of Eastern stranded patterns. I guess I mainly focus on the knitting that a machine does not want to do. |
