Embroider Your Knits: The Basics with Beth Whiteside
Anna Zilboorg’s Splendid Apparel introduced the knitting world to
a new way of adding
color and emphasizing pattern to your knitting with a little embroidery.
Let’s keep it simple, learning 4 stitches and playing with color and
placement on k2, p2 ribbing. If you have embroidered for years, but
never added it to your knitting . . . or never threaded a needle, this
basic cuff will get you started.
Please bring 1 completed cuff to class. Sponsored by XRX Books. Supplies
Small amounts of sock or sport-weight yarn (variegated or handpaints can be fun) or Persian or tapestry needlepoint yarn in at least 3 contrasting colors. We will provide tapestry needles.Homework
With 110 yds #4 (worsted-weight) yarn and 3.75mm/US 5 needles, cast on 38 stitches.
Row 1 (RS) [K2, p2] to last 2 stitches, k2.
Row 2 [P2, k2] to last 2 stitches, p2.
Continue to knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches until
piece measures 4–6" from cast-on. Bind off in pattern. Do not seam.
If you want to make a wine cozy instead of a cuff, do not bind off. We
will work the embroidery, then you will transfer the stitches to
double-pointed needles and work the base.
