Cable Variations: The Next Tier with Melissa Leapman
Thinking about adding a new tier to your basic cable package? Join author/designer Melissa Leapman as she expands your options! You'll knit several fun and unusual cable stitch patterns and motifs, including some that include color and lace techniques.
Homework swatches with yarn still attached and needles used; extra white or cream-colored, smooth, #4 (worsted weight) yarn; two 3.5 or 3.75mm/US 4 or 5 double pointed needles.
Make 4 swatches with smooth, light-colored, #4 (worsted weight yarn) and 5mm/US 8 needles as follows:
Swatch 1: Cast on 20 sts. Work k1, p1 rib for 1". Work 4 rows of stockinette stitch. Slip stitches onto holder.
Swatch 2: Cast on 18 sts. Work k1, p1 rib for 1". Work stockinette stitch for 4 rows. Slip stitches onto holder.
Swatch 3: Cast on 40 sts. Work k1, p1 rib for 6 rows. Row 7: K8, p2, k9, p2, k9, p2, k8. Row 8: P8, k2, p9, k2, p9, k2, p8. Row 9: K8, p2, slip next 4 sts onto cable needle (cn) and hold in BACK of work, k4, k4 from cn, k1, p2, k1, slip next 4 sts onto cn and hold in FRONT of work, k4, k4 from cn, p2, k8. Row 10: Same as Row 8. Do not cut yarn; slip stitches onto holder.
Swatch 4: With bright or dark solid-colored yarn, cast on 22 sts. Work k2, p2 rib for 1". Do not cut yarn; slip stitches onto holder.
