Moonrise Necklace with Sivia Harding
This necklace gets lots of attention, mostly from knitters who cannot believe it was knit! A garden of beads is randomly strung onto lace-weight yarn to produce a luscious, densely beaded necklace. Students develop bead-stringing skills, learn to easily manage strung beads, and work the easiest short rows ever to shape this remarkably comfortable and very beautiful neckpiece. Guaranteed to be an addictive knit and a fabulous, unique gift!
_30 yards of smooth, knot-free lace weight yarn, preferably in a silk or silk-blend (Please consider using a lighter color of yarn to help you see your stitches better)
_2mm/US 0 double pointed needles (preferably bamboo)
_About 50 grams or 3/4 cup of size 6/0 beads plus assorted other beads such as pressed glass, drops, daggers, cubes, and magatamas (please bring more than you will need, and some to share)
_Clasp (toggle, magnetic, or whatever sort of finding you prefer, found in bead stores)
_Threader such as dental floss threader (from drug store), wire needle, or big eye bead needle
_Toilet paper or paper towel tube for winding beaded yarn
_Tupperware container with shallow lid or plastic baggie
You may want to choose beads around a color theme for an effective piece. Large, heavy beads are not appropriate for this delicate necklace.
If you would rather, Sivia will have kits available for $30. The kits will contain everything you need EXCEPT the needles!
Make a notch on one end of the toilet paper tube. Wind yarn around tube, securing beginning end in the notch. Check yarn carefully for any knots. If there are knots, cut them out. You will need about 30 yards of knot-free yarn.
