Graft a Toe Like a Pro! with Sarah Peasley
Do you flat out refuse to knit socks from the cuff down because of the dreaded Kitchener Stitch? That eensy weensy little bit of grafting at the very end of the toe, on hardly any stitches? Suck it up, buttercup! Sarah gets you going step by step, then shares some awesome hints that will make you toss your cheat sheet aside and Kitchener like nobody's business. Be the boss of those sock toes, one grafted stitch at a time!
1.75 oz (50 g) smooth, light-colored, worsted-weight yarn; 4.5mm/US7 double-pointed needles, approximately 7" in length; blunt darning needle; stitch holders (for swatches); and scissors
SWATCHES 1 and 2 Cast on 20 stitches.
Rows 1-4 Knit (garter stitch).
Row 5 Purl.
Row 6 Knit.
Repeat Rows 5 and 6 (stockinette stitch) until piece measures 3" (end after a knit row). Do not bind off. Place stitches on hold. Cut yarn, leaving an 8" tail.
SWATCHES 3 and 4 Repeat Swatches 1 and 2 EXCEPT leave a 2 yard tail.
SWATCH 5 Cast on 24 stitches. Divide onto 3 double-pointed needles and join to work in the round, being careful not to twist. Knit (stockinette stitch) until piece measures 2". Do not bind off. Place stitches on hold. Cut yarn, leaving a 2 yard tail.
