Finishing with a Bang, Not a Whimper: Buttonholes and Zippers with Harry Wells
Finishing means many things in knitting, and doing it well is essential to an attractive garment outcome. A beautifully seamed garment is key. Learn how to create several different types of button bands and button holes (both embedded and on edges) and how to sew a zipper into a knitted garment.

Supplies
#4 (worsted-weight) wool/wool blend yarn in light or medium color (no dark colors); US7 straight needles (or 24” circular) and DPNs; small scissors; locking stitch markers; waste yarn; T-pins or pearlized head straight pins; 6" zipper, sewing needle, nylon thread matching zipper color.

Sharp scissors, notebook, pen or pencil with an eraser, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needles (large and small), flexible tape measure, small calculator, and needles & crochet hooks of various sizes.

Homework
Swatches 1-3 Using #4 (worsted-weight) wool yarn and US7 needles, work three stockinette swatches as follows:  CO 16 sts, work 30 rows, and BO.
Swatch 4 Using #4 (worsted-weight) wool yarn and US7 needles, work 1 garter stitch swatch. CO 16 sts, work 30 rows, and BO.
Swatches 5 & 6 Using #4 (worsted-weight) wool yarn and US7 needles, work 2 stockinette swatches, C0 20 sts, work 6 inches, and BO.
Swatches 7 & 8 Using #4 (worsted-weight) wool yarn and US7 needles, work 2 stockinette swatches, CO 14 sts, work ten rows and place live sts on waste yarn or stitch holder. Leave 10 foot tails for working yarn.
