Vincent: A Challenging Study in Color with Karla Overland
The Van Gogh Cherrywood Challenge What happens when quilters from all over the world use the same fabric, colors, and inspiration? In the case of the Van Gogh Challenge, the answer is 465 small quilts and a jaw-dropping collection of fiber art! All inspired by the works of Vincent van Gogh and using Cherrywood sueded cotton in a gradation of 4 blues.
Join Karla Overland, curator of the challenge, for a free slide presentation. A Challenging Study in Color tracks the growth of these popular contests from Wicked in 2014, to Lion King in 2016, to Van Gogh in 2017. You will follow the journey of 200 of the Vincent challenge quilts from Cherrywood's studio in Brainerd, Minnesota to New York City, Australia, and France. The challenges have pushed artists to try new techniques and perhaps think outside their comfort zones. The global theme of the quilts and tactile nature of the medium hold universal appeal.
Karla Overland, Owner of Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics—dyer, teacher, quilt artist—has sewn since she was 10 and made clothes for 4-H. While earning a Graphic Design degee, she worked in bridal alterations and taught herself to quilt. Today, Cherrywood has a staff of six and Karla formulates color gradations for their unique sueded cotton. In 2014, she organized the Cherrywood Challenge to see what artists can create with a limited color palette and a few simple rules. After three years, the challenge has taken on a life of its own, exposing tens of thousands of viewers all over the world to the beauty of Cherrywood and the amazing creativity of quilters and sewists.
