Break Your Serger Out of the Box with Jennifer Stern
One of the most common things new serger owners say is "I'm afraid to take it out of the box."... The second most common thing is "I only use my serger to finish raw edges." If you've ever wondered what a serger is, or if you own one, and you'd like to know how to make the most of its basic capabilities, join Jennifer for this fun class.

We'll start with an overview of the serger so you'll be familiar with threading and how it works. Then we'll examine a basic 4-Thread Stitch to understand how it's formed. By identifying the needle and looper threads, you'll be able to "read" your work to tell easily which settings need to be adjusted to fix a less-than-perfect stitch.
One of the serger's most helpful features allows you to sew a wide variety of fabrics without gathering or stretching them out of shape. We'll play with this differential feed to see how to get a nice smooth seam on lightweight or sheer fabrics as well as stretchy knits.

*Learn about the basic 3- and 4-Thread Stitches that are used to sew garment seams and finish edges.
*Sample easy specialty and decorative stitches: a rolled hem for stable and sheer fabrics, a decorative lettuce-edge on a knit, and a decorative flat-lock stitch.
*See how easy it is to sew around curves and circles, starting and stopping so it is practically invisible.
*For those times when something goes wrong and you need to take out a seam, learn how to take out a 4- or 3-Thread Stitch with no seam ripper.

That's a lot, but each technique covered has a corresponding workbook page with step-by-step instructions and fabric samples neatly stored in a page protector. You'll leave class armed with this valuable reference to help you with your future serger projects.

Note: Sergers provided for use in class.
