Since its first appearance in Knitter's Magazine issues 42–46, the Great American Afghan has appealed to thousands of knitters.
Now re-knit in a new colorway and in updated yarn, the secret to this sampler afghan's success is still the square: 25 squares designed by 25 knitters. The squares are knit one at a time, keeping your knitting portable and making the designs interchangeable. Of course you're free to choose a square or a color to repeat or omit, developing ideas as you go. It's so encouraging to see the completed squares stack up and to know that with many of them, you have learned something new!
GAA, as it is known in-house, can be a great learning experience, a stash buster, and a source of design inspiration for many other pieces—whether made of squares, strips, or in one piece. When we reknit the original for this edition, we could hardly stop—trying new color ways, more luxurious yarns, planning pillows—and we share our process.
We suggest squares that we consider the easiest and the most challenging—and there are a few. As always, all techniques are fully explained and illustrated. Finishing options are given as well as instructions for turning squares into pillows.
